I was going through my old BP issues and I was rereading the 1988 Black Panther Mini. As reading through the book I came across the mention of a organization called the Order of the Panther and it really intrigued me. I could not find any other reference of it in any other Panther lore. After a little research I found the original writer Peter Gillis and asked him. Here was the reply he gave me.

Denys and I wanted to a) break a bit away from T'Challa as Sidney Poitier--you know, wholesome, perfect and sexless--and imply that there's an awfullot you don't know about him. Hence his relationship with the mysterious Malaika. Similarly, the Order of the Panther was one of those continuity stones you throw out there into the darkness--a mysterious support network that wasn't called in on the current story line--that could be a) a gift to any future writer on the Panther or b) a built in cool thing if Denys or I ever returned to do the Panther.

I would love to see some more of this in future Panther writings but one can only hope.

The Order of the Panther sounds like a really good idea. Marvel could even make that title into a mini-series, or an ongoing (if Black Panther ever becomes popular enough to be able to sustain two comic book titles).
