I always prefer the runs that explore who Steve is as a man, not an icon. Lee and Colan's run, Englehart, Gerber, Dematteis, Brubaker, and many parts of Gruenwald's are among my favorites.

I was looking at those. Getting a Marvel Unlimited sub pretty soon so going to wait until then to start reading them but looking forward to some I haven't read and revisiting the stuff I did so long ago.

Now, all this doesn't mean I don't think seeing Steve's thoughts, either in caption or balloons, wouldn't have made it a richer story.

Totally and completely agree. We shouldn't have to guess what's happening in their heads. I like the captions better than thought balloons just because they don't cover up the art work. Normally. But with the Orphan Annie style (there were people with just dots for eyes in this) it could go either way.

I also think a lot of writers could have made evil Steve work well, with him mind controlled, but still at odds. Actually wanting a benevolent HYDRA. But it doesn't matter because all of these things are past now.

This is the fast exit and forget, although it's always more interesting to actually WORK with the previous stories handed to you and make them viable.

As for future Steve? I think the whole point is to take him offf the chessboard in a more respectful way.

Agreed but not happy.

I honestly believe that across the next 2 Avnegers movies, Cap, Iron Man, and possibly Thor, and Hulk will die.

Agreed. You've got Captain Marvel coming, too, she's gonna be a replacement for the heaviest of hitters.

The new characters were not done for any diversity reason. It was to prepare the next phase of movies.

My guess is that #700 will in some way lead to not-Steve as Cap. Probably Falcon, maybe Bucky. Either are fine (as fine as I can be without it being Steve) as long as the writer is less hamfisted than Nick Spencer.

I'd like someone entirely new to take the mantle, not a been there done that character. Let Sam and Buck be their own people.

I think Waid is here to either retire Cap, kill him in a respectful way, or just put him soomeplace else for a while. After all, how long does retirement or death last in comicsanyway.

Hopefully in an alternate location so we can still enjoy him.

I think Lee and Colan's stuff is the best place to start, then just move forward, and jump around as you see fit.
