Falcon 004 (2018)
This was the "exact" same story as the Jean Grey #11 this week - but this read SO MUCH brighter by comparison! Instead of JeEn walking thru Phoenix's afterlife realm, Sam is walking his self-realization journey thru Mephisto's realm. Instead of JeEn crossing paths with imaginary D-Listers from X-mencentric timelines, Sam interacts with significant family and friends from his personal life that have died. Actually, in too many ways it is similar rescue story as Phoenix Resurrection #5 -oddly enough also out this week- but saving Sam was MUCH MORE relatable and as such entertaining. Instead of the umpteen X-men literally just standing around as OML trying to help JeAn, this book has an interesting cast all actively involved with the rescue: Patriot Ray, Falcon Joaquin, Voodoo and the welcome, appropriate, surprise guest star Hellstorm!
Stated in my last Champions review how GREAT it is that Joaquin is going for a new codename and it's fantastic that it is acknowledged here. The sooner the better. Wow, he has "Inhuman" sized eyes, eh.
Falcon has not been my favourite relaunched title by a longshot but this was genuinely a strong chapter in this opening arc. Still indifferent about the art - but that splash page with Mephisto's Throne of Skulls looked awesome. Also, while the surprise appearance of Two-Gun was wonderful - "curiously" the fact that his spirit was assigned to Hell seems debatable and the mouth deformity mimicking DC's Jonah Hex seems desparate cheap knockoff.
On the plus side, this ish addresses Sam's unlikely self-confidence issues of this ongoing pitched subplot in a... bearable manner. Redwing's bedside loyalty is heartening. Ray and Joaquin were presented truly heroic. Voodoo and Hellstorm were used very smart. And the best part, as dismal and unbelievable as issues 1-3 have been, after Falcon's "resurrection" here it finally feels like this street level crime buster and the title character has a suspenseful chance to save Chicago and kick Blackheart's ass.
Great cover too. What did u think?
