He did that because, were he to be held in place, even for a few seconds, the fight would have been considered over. He chose the most expedient escape that he could come up with under those circumstances. Making himself small enough to fit through the cracks.

In the time that it took him to think to himself, that he couldn't be trapped or he would lose th fight and THEN have to say the magic word, he could have already been free of the Ferris wheel. It's neither heavy enough nor durable enough to hold someone of CM's strength. Risking turning himself into a 16 year old kid with no powers when he could have just torn through the steel of the wheel as quickly (if not quicker) was stupid.
