Of course there is a suspension of disbelief when a comic is read -- but as I pointed out to "rc" the Spectre is a tangible being. The feat clearly was meant to be a struggle and not something that WW & Supes could do indefinitely. The Hercules "feat" was a story told in another story -- and there is no indication of exactly what happened. Atlas wasn't charged with holding UP the world -- the mythology doesn't have Atlas holding up the Universe but simply wedging himself between the Sky (Uranus) and Earth (Gaea).
