The "reset" happened because Thor used the Odin force to go back in time to prevent the events of the Reigning. That meant that everything that happened in that storyline effectively didn't happen.

Ret-cons take many shapes and forms. Timeline resets, the classic Starlin "it was a clone!" excuse etc etc. A ret-con is anything that changes an element of a previous storyline.
