Whilst we're on Superman's non-planet moving showings, here's my personal favourite - an all-out Supes not just struggling with but flat-out failing to lift and being pushed down by a 2-ton (!!!) pummel block.

With apologies to our more reasonable superfans i have to say that i loooooooove this. Superman does seem to have less brick/snake moments if due to tighter editorial protection or fans not sharing some of his less flattering moments from more obscure books but glad to see this one made it out into the world at large. Good thing for Superman its not part of an "undeniable trend" or anything. Still its always nice to have "provenance"! ;\)

I don't see what is so incredible here or what special editorial protection the character has the hulk hasn't. It's not a political event, Superman doesn't has any "special" editorial protection in his own title and such low showings do exist in his past. Specially in the Jurgens era where the MAN was more important than the super. But there definitly is a "trend" and THIS isn't it at all.

I do feel that a writer would be more likely to get a no if they were to write something that most readers of this board (a pretty anal and obsessive subset of the anal and obsessive comic book reading population) would take to be a low showing if the character were Superman rather than Hulk or Thor. I think Hulk has gotten a lot of protection in terms of strength and from accounts it was a bit of an issue to negotiate the Rulk victory over Thor but other than that i dont think Joe Q or anyone else would raise an eyebrow if Hulk or Thor were knocked out by a casually thrown brick. Hell Rulk was stabbed by a guy with a knife. I havent read much from the Jurgens era but at least these days I doubt a story pitch with
"Everyone is in a bar watching Batman fight Superman on TV and they all think Batman is gonna lose but then Batman knocks him out with like, I dunno, a dumptruck or something" would get through unaltered at least. Or maybe its just that its so easy for an editor to say "throw some Kryptonite in there and its good to go".

Several threads of low showings were made in the past and Superman had quite a list(Struggling with planes, daily planet globe, a gargoyle, Dr Light...) but it's normal over such a huge collection of issues. A dozen of bad showings over thousands of issues isn't really bad at all. It's not like surfer who has one comicbook a years, if he's nice, and got his arm bend out of shape by say... black panther... that hurt your average a lot when something low comes your way.

Its tricky. I agree with much of what you say and i think Superman does have a very low number of poor showings for so many issues. OTOH this is never acknowledged by Daveym when he is going on about "the sheer volume" of good showings for Superman especially as compared to someone like Thor who has been mostly dead in recent years.

I can guarantee you now that not anywhere in his entire continuity will you find the Hulk flat-out failing an attempted strength feat in this manner.

Don't ever let anyone convince you Superman isn't as inconsistent as everybody else. He has ridiculous low showings too and this is just one of many. Not to say he isn't as strong as strong comes... just that there is two sides to every story, no matter what some would have you believe....
