Marvel recently came out with an official Lucifer that is the same one in Christianity, but power wise he was not that impressive.

I believe most theologists belief that Lucifer and the Devil are two different characters in the Bible. At some point, the roles were just smeared. This is why you have the conflicting story of the Devil being both on Earth and in Hell. The Devil is in Hell pulling the levers. Lucifer walks the Earth. That's the scholarly interpretation anyway. I'm sure there is room for debate.

This also justifies Marvel's portrayal of these characters. Lucifer is just another angle and angles don't seem to be all that tough, at least on Earth, in the MU. And it explains why there are many generic devils. Even in the Bible, the Devil is very generic. I think the devils that show up in Ghost Rider are a better fit for the classic Devil than the Mephisto types.
