I know Joe Q said this is the last big event but from what I can see, its his job to lie to us (I don't take it personal). I don't think DC made any such promise and the way 'Blackest Night" is flying off the shelves. So which writers delivers the best plot and action in these kinda stories?

If I had to choose a writer for the next big event and considering that continuity, consistency, and characterization are important to me...
...then I'd probably go with Roger Stern or Kurt Busiek.
Since neither of them seem to have the editorial gravitational pull of a BMB, I'd likely have to pick from one of the newer 'stars'. Of the 'Young Guns', I'd probably go with Matt Fraction. I'm loving his stuff on Iron Man and X-Men, and can't wait to see what he does with Thor. I would assign a tough editor to him to make sure his stuff is consistent with the rest of the comic universe, as in Iron Man there's the occasional WTF moment - but for the most part his writing is pretty solid, IMO.
