Still though that was in the eyes of mortals, when was he ever impressive to his fellow gods? I know Zeus Taught Apollo a lesson for over stepping his boundries, but who has ever challenged or feared Ares?

In Greek texts, Ares was unloved. Despised. But he was not talk to others as fodder or something like that.

It seems to me that this looks like a misconception born out of him being a classic "villain" (and a despised one at that) in most modern takes. Ares was always there in the major wars that the Olympians fought, and like others have killed Gigantes and monsters. He didn`t got sme of his monikers by being a nice guy in a world populated by creatures and Gods.

Sure, some poets made him into a arrogant (that`s war) man who would beg for Zeus to help him at one or two ocassions...like every son (aka Thor) have done. The fact he saw Zeus prefering a demi god over him would contribute to that. But Ares got great scenes in classic Greek myth. The best being taking a man who raped his amazon daughter into trials, waiting the sentence and then when no decision was drawn out (the other Olympians were nice fellows too...) he just took his spearand cut the guy in half. And nobody challenged on his decision.

It`s a matter of accepting takes and realizing that modern sensabilities are different than ancient ones. People talk about how Kratos is awesome but heck, the player controls it. If you suck at playing you fail, if you don`t you are awesome. Ares a figure that belongs to a whole culture on the other hand needed to be refined according to that culture.

And that culture hated his guts, overall.
