He defeated Hermes in a race straigh on? No circumstances? I need to see that one. I think I have read Heracles reacting enough to Apollo and Artemis when they showed up to stop him from hunting the Hynd.

It was one of the origin stories of the Olympics as recorded by Herodotus and Pausanias. Zeus held the games to celebrate his victory over the Titans. Apollo is stated to have defeated Ares in a boxing match and outran Hermes. Given it these are games I assume it was a straight race.

Yeah, I recall reading somewhere that one reason Hercules didn't kill the Golden Hind out of respect and fear for Artemis.
