But Superman wasn't fighting Hulk, the only duel was if Hulk could even move Superman.

It isn't saying Hulk is reaching Superman in strength though. Where is it stated?

            Quote:
The entire encounter between them is the duel. The Hulk is certainly trying to hurt Superman and we are told that the outcome is in doubt which means he might succeed. The only way I can think of for the Hulk to succeed is for his strength to approach Superman's. Why in the last panel does Superman need to raise his hand to block Hulk's punch? Are Hulk's punches starting to hurt him?

Uh-huh, there is no duel between Superman and Hulk. The only thing that was being tested was if Hulk could even move Superman as stated explicitly in the comic.

The narrator tells you there is a "strange duel" between them.

    Quote:
Which is about if Hulk can move Superman at all. Not a fight between them.

Hulk might hurt Superman but hurting someone and actually beating someone is a different thing.

The narrator tells you that the duel is in doubt, i.e. Superman could lose.

    Quote:
Superman could be moved, not lose.

    Quote:
There was no fight at all there.

There is no reason give for why Superman blocked Hulk's punch but its not due to being hurt.

        How do you know that?

    Quote:
Because he is not hurt at all?

    Quote:

      Quote:
You do at least acknowledge, right, that because of his ever-increasing strength, the Hulk was becoming capable of overcoming whatever power Superman was using to keep him in place?

    Quote:
Superman wasn't using any power to keep him in place. That was just how strong he was that he could no sell Hulk's punches.

So the narrator is telling us that the Hulk with his geometrically increasing strength was threatening to overcome Superman's strength? Okay.
