Yes and no. Galactus is quite well suited to using machines. Including his ship and the technology located on it. We see that in many arcs he is included in. There's also the ultimate nullifier as an example, though he's used scanning and other equipment.

I agree in *battle* we would expect to see him using his personal power, not weapons. So I have to assume the weapon is for a specific purpose to counter something King Thanos has, and not just a "big-ass gun". There's nothing a gun should be able to do that Galactus cannot in terms of raw power. But it could (and hopefully does) serve an alternate task.
