So, if Thor couldn't get to his feet whilst a battle was raging for the fate of his universe, he was too scared to carry on fighting then?

Sure, they both went to fight at the same time against Kronos.

Given that Thor and Superman fought (Thor got ko'd by the way), then Superman got jumped by the Avengers. Then they both got up at the same time, with Thor using bravado to get him through it, it also shows not only did Superman win, but his recovery time was quicker, even though he took a beating from Thor and 5 other Avengers.

Thor waited sitting like a boxer in his corner for Superman to get up so they could fight a second round, but Superman took too long and Krona attacked Grandmaster, forcing them to team-up. Wanda was like his corner man (woman).
