Cosmic Hierarchy - Tough one, the MU is so much more defined and everyone on this board knows Death, Eternity, they also sweep cosmic and mystical forces very neatly and this is core to the universe. Thor is the son of Odin, Silver Surfer is the herald of a skyfather being, Dr Strange invokes the power of Demons and Elder Gods etc.
They generally do a better job than DC even with New Genesis and the GLC, but DC blows them away with the Endless, Marvel just can't compete at this type of storytelling. However the Infinity Gauntlet is probably the greatest ever cosmic story, it beats Crisis in pure wow factor. Hickman 'the Hackman' has hurt Starlin's legacy IMO, but luckily most people don't seem to be considering his storytelling to much.
Winner: Marvel, by quantity. On pure top end scales, I would say the Sandman beats anything Marvel can offer, but it's isolated and Marvel in general play this game better on average.
Marvel - A, DC - B
BRAUGI: DC is more all over the place than Marvel with their showings, though Marvel has been on the decline in many ways in terms of consistency. I do like the Marvel cosmic stories better in general.
Iconic Heroes - Yeah, DC wins this. Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman. Marvel have made great strides in the last 15 years. Thor, Iron Man and Cap are getting there and Spiderman, Wolverine, Hulk have always been popular. They STILL don't have an A class female though.
Marvel - B, DC - A
BRAUGI: I think DC blows Marvel out of the water. Thor is a blip, as are the Fantastic Four, with some mediocre old cartoons and whatnot, but there is NO icon competitive with Superman, and Batman is probably #2 in comics. Everyone knows Wonder Woman.
Marvel traditionally basically has Spider Man and the Hulk that might get into the top tier.
Iconic Villains - Wow. DC have Luthor, Joker, Deathstroke, Darkseid, Marvel have Thanos, Dr Doom, Loki, Magneto. This is probably a dead heat.
Marvel - B, DC - B
BRAUGI: I actually think Marvel is stronger than DC in villains, though DC probably has the 2 most well known outside of comics circles in Lex Luthor and the Joker. IMO Marvel wins this with a higher number of recognizable and truly classic villains, but DC remains competitive due to Joker and Luthor and sheer recognition outside of the comics world.
Social Commentary - Marvel have heroes you can relate to - Spiderman, the X-Men are basically the LGBTQ community. In a sense, DC are to iconic and removed. The Watchmen series negates the gap somewhat critically, but at it's best is a self contained series.
Marvel - A, DC - C
BRAUGI: I think DC was the first to take on drugs, when Roy Harper became addicted to heroin in the 80's, but in general, I do think Marvel's relatibility gives it a slight leg up, but I think its a little closer than you indicate, though you're right in that the X men have been able to sub in for any discriminated minority.
Yeah, Marvel wins this somewhat easily.
Marvel - A, DC - C
All time critical appeal
Marvel have the Infinity Gauntlet, Secret Wars, DC have the entire run of the Sandman and the Watchmen
Marvel - B, DC - A
BRAUGI: Yeah, Watchmen is at or near the top of the list, but
I think Marvel wins overall as well, more consistent over a longer time period. DC has some amazing stuff though.
Overall - Marvel probably wins on average.
