I was talking with my friend the other day. I completely understand the value and the future of movies on Blu ray/HD-DVD, especially because I just got an HDTV (though I'm still sticking with my trusty DVD player for the time being).

But, my friend was talking about how we went back to buy all of our favorite movies that we used to have on VHS and got them all on DVD. We were wondering if at some point, consumers will want to buy all of those movies AGAIN on the new High Def format.

I wouldn't think the market would function like that, because you can't really up the quality of old movies to High Def format. Neither of us know enough about the technology--do you all think DVDs of older movies will keep being sold in stores in a few years? Are, say, Blu Ray players backward compatible to play DVDs?

I'm betting it's going to take a long time before the regular DVDs are phased out. I read somewhere they said the HD-format DVD only made up 2% of the current movie buying market.

No idea.

I don't think people will be as quick to switch from DVD to HD-format as they were from VHS to DVD. For one - With VHS if you watched the movie over and over and over again eventually your tape would were out. With DVDs as long as you don't scratch or dirty the disk they keep the same quality.
