I was talking with my friend the other day. I completely understand the value and the future of movies on Blu ray/HD-DVD, especially because I just got an HDTV (though I'm still sticking with my trusty DVD player for the time being).

But, my friend was talking about how we went back to buy all of our favorite movies that we used to have on VHS and got them all on DVD. We were wondering if at some point, consumers will want to buy all of those movies AGAIN on the new High Def format.

I wouldn't think the market would function like that, because you can't really up the quality of old movies to High Def format. Neither of us know enough about the technology--do you all think DVDs of older movies will keep being sold in stores in a few years? Are, say, Blu Ray players backward compatible to play DVDs?

Eventually one format will win out over the other. The price of the blu ray or hd dvd player will have to drop. Then DVD's will be slowly phased out...but it won't be anytime soon.

Both Blu Ray and HD DVD players are supposed to be backwards compatible with DVDs and CDs. I think for a company to sell you a HD DVD player or Blu Ray player the player MUST be backward compatible. DVDs are supposed to use the MPEG-2 codec I think and both Blu Ray and HD DVD can read that.

I'm wondering if all the movies I've burned with Nero would still play on an hd dvd or blu ray players.
