> just today while in my cubicle at work, while listening to my iPod (BLASTING some Blue Man Group) i suddenly felt one of my coworkers approaching. mind you, i'm in my cubicle, facing the corner of two walls, totally oblivious to all sounds except the music coming from my iPod, and tapping my feet to said music, yet i could still sense my coworker's presence in crescendo up to the point where he was standing right behind me. below, you mentioned how you believe we have no soul, spirit, essence etc., and that everything about us is simply the sum of the chemical reactions in our bodies and brains. my question is: do you think it was a chemical process that allowed me to sense my coworker presence? or am i merely an atypical, strange (albeit cool ;\-\) ) person?

You were following your perceptions, even if you don't realize it. Just because you have your iPod on doesn't mean that you cannot hear beyond that, plus you are using your other sensory organs (biggest one being your skin).
