Depends entirely upon what you mean by "respect." I treat people politely without them having to earn it. Being polite is a default state. If a person appears to need help, I'll offer assistance. I open doors for people, etc.

However, I do not revere, admire, honour, regard highly, etc. without the other person earning it. If my first encounter with someone is them acting like a jackass, then the default state automatically changes.

The way we treat others has less to do with what we think they deserve and more to do with what kind of person we want to be.
