A dark, painful period of American history that is still being felt and debated today... it's not something that should be celebrated.

No matter what people argue, it has been used as a symbol of racism for too long. People that want to flaunt that image, no matter how much they aregue about heritage, rights, or history... they are opening themselves up to criticism.

I don't think we should submit to the lowest common denominator here. While the Confederate Flag has been used as a symbol of racism, it have various other meanings which are more popular. It represents things like the Southern lifesytle, independence, rebellion, etc. If I see a confederate symbol on a belt buckle, I'm not going to assume that person is racist.

Even the confederacy wasn't fought over mainly the issue of slavery, but of state's rights.

It's no different than a swastika.

No. It's completely different for numerous reasons. The Nazi swastika has come to represent only one thing.

... as I fully recognize that both symbols have much different meanings than what they are more commonly associated with.
But the fact remains that both symbols have been widely used by multiple rascist groups... they have been demonized bacause of it. Both symbols are commonly associated with hatred and bigotry, and it isn't really unjust.
Someone that has a confederate belt-buckle may not be racist, and they may be. The point is though, that they have chosen to wear a demonized symbol.
Not alot of people realize that the swastika is almost as old as human civilization itself, and any basket weaving society of the past revered it with utmost respect.
