Some people who display the confederate flag would say that they are using it for non-racist meanings is an attempt to 'take back the symbol'.

Its almost the same excuse that the african-american defenders of entertainers and youth [amongst others] using that word. They are 'redifining' a word of hate. . . right?

The difference perhaps being that while black people didn't originate the N-word and are less "taking it back" than "taking it for their own," the people who want to fly the Confederate flag tend to be white Southerners...the exact same people who invented and used the flag to begin
with. It's a lot easier for a black person to claim new meanings for a previously anti-black word than for a white Southerner to magically erase the less-positive connotations of a militant white Southern symbol.
