The Confederate flag was for those of the past okay with slavery.

Quite a generalization there. What did the Duke Boys ever do to you?

Shouldn't southerners not wanting to be associated with Confederate's of the past, want to embrace a new flag that says "I'm a southerner?"

For better or worse, the Confederate Flag is the first symbol people think of for the south. You can try to replace that symbol with another image, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

It's also the only real symbol (that I can think of at least) which represents a region of the country. What's the symbol for the Northeast? Southwest?
