But in order to become the leader of the natives, he performed their greatest feat, an accomplishment of mythic proportions: he rode the dragon-thing. That, to me, was bizarre, given the fact that he was the newest of all newbies at riding anything at all.

On a side note, I thought it was weird that we didn't get to see him conquer the dragon-thing. We saw him dive onto it, but then the scene changed and we never saw the battle for supremacy, maybe because the director didn't think it could be portrayed in a believable manner.
