Expecially with the trailers and the little reviews I had heard . . . Ok another movie about how the Evil Corperate/Millitary Culture is so inferior to the nature loving hippies.

That was certainly there and I'm in no way saying the race thing trumped that theme but the race subtext stuff was there IMO. Avatar is like all these other movies where the white guy lives amongst another culture becomes accepted them and becomes their greatest champion. It's conceited and patronizing.

That said I am also angered by the military is evil theme as well. In my mind there were only two bad humans in the entire movie...the business guy and the marines leader. Everyone else was people trying to do their job best they could probably to support their families and here I am expected to root for their slaughter by the aliens. Bah.

Anyways I didn't see it as a "white savior" thing, I guess you can consider him getting his new ride as him being the best of them, but I didn't consider it that way. I think the reason why he was so effective at the end was that he knew the enemy [all us americans] and knew how to fight us.

Yes that example is exactly why I see it. His girl said mastering that creature was a feat that had been accomplished only say 5 times in the history of their civilization and then he rides off to save his new people from the evil horde of humanity. Yes he was very much their white savior.
