It's interesting that things that I was taught to be incorrect when I was in school are now accepted alternates or simply correct. School textbooks base their idea of what's correct on dictionaries. Dictionaries are simply an observation of common usage. If something is wrong, but enough people use it, it becomes right. When I was a kid, the plural of "fish" was "fish." "Fishes" was incorrect and you sounded stupid if you said it. But it was commonly used anyway and eventually it became an accepted alternate. One day, "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish" will be archaic. Maybe it already is.

i'm kinda in the middle ground. me and my fiancee/girlfriend often get into little debates about this stuff. being the English buff that she is, she's a proponent of proper grammer, sentence structure, certain ways of spelling, etc. i typically adhere to those rules when i write as a hobby, but my argument to her is: if a person can find a better way to get a reader to comprehend what he/she's trying to say, then that way should be taken even if it goes against the rule. leaped or lept should only matter if a reader/listener comprehends one better than the other.

i agree though. "fishes" just sounds completely weird to me, even with my quasi-way of following the rules.
