While on principle I hate the idea of universal healthcare. I would definitely support a catastrophic coverage. If your bill is over 100,000 I think you should be off the hook.

Universal healthcare coverage is a great idea in theory, but I don't think there is a proper way for the US to convert to that idea instantly. The US has to have a complete overhaul on their healthcare system in order for any of it to work. Four easy ideas that would need to happen:

1) Specialty centers - Centers that deal with specific types of procedures only. Shouldice Hernia Centre ( is a great example. This place only does hernia operations, which they can do better, cheaper, and faster than any other place.

2) Increase in family practitioners - If only to stop sending people with minor injuries like a headache and the flu to the emergency room. A huge problem with programs like Medicare is that it enables a person to pay just $5 to go to the Emergency Room. So they go there for things like aspirin for a headache, which means the hospital has to spend huge resources on minor problems.

3) Increase class sizes for medical school - The AMA and medical institutions are allowed to limit the class sizes of doctors and other healthcare professionals, meaning that they can deny quality applicants. This is because the goal is to restrict supply, increase demand, and increase their cost.

4) Discourage bad behavior, encourage good behavior- Charge more for junk food than you do healthy food. Remove junk food from schools. Being a smoker and being overweight should be a huge expense.

That is grim.

For all the horror stories and faults of the UK's National Health System, I am happier to be here.
