One of the main reasons junk food sells so well is because it's cheap AND filling. A poor family can purchase that, and perhaps STILL have money left over for rent (clothing is another matter).

Raising the price of junk food without raising the breadwinner's wages will only ensure hunger. Why not LOWER the price of fresh fruits and vegetables, instead of raising the price of food that's bad for you?

Why not raise the price of junk food by taxing it, and having the government supplement the cost of health food? It's an easy solution. We basically do the same thing for alcohol and tobacco, two products that are bad for you. We use "sin taxes" on those products to discourage people from buying them.

The situation has nothing to do with income, since from the consumer standpoint you are still spending the same amount of money, just for different products. You are still spending a $1 on a drink, it's going to be apple juice instead of soda.

People will still buy junk food, the cost of being fat will just increase tremendously. Look at what the increase in cigarettes have done. Less people smoking, better health, but those that really want to smoke are going to have to pay.

IF you can get the pro-business politicians behind it all the way, it could work. If not, all you'd be doing is pricing more food out of reach of people who NEED it.
