IF you can get the pro-business politicians behind it all the way, it could work. If not, all you'd be doing is pricing more food out of reach of people who NEED it.

Cigarette companies are against taxes on cigarettes, doesn't mean anything. As long as the people (thru the government) request a change, it will happen. Government have banned all types of unhealthy behaviors, and even foods. Look at the recent movement to ban transfats. The government already subsidizes the costs of food products. Many other governments are looking to ban or tax unhealthy foods.

But there are lots of other ideas that could be done. How about limiting advertisements aimed at children for unhealthy foods. Requiring that kid's meals at restaurants be below a certain calorie limit. Putting the calories for an item on the actual menu. B.Clinton has the idea of banning soft drinks and junk food from school vending machines.

Have you seen recent news broadcasts, MJ? Many fresh fruits will be priced even more out of reach for the working poor, due to a harsh winter and the recent earthquakes.

Putting a special tax on cheaper foods before there's enough fruits and vegetables to go around would be a terrible disaster. \:\(
