Quote:Do current world events make you feel more wary about travel, particularly internationally?
No, I have not traveled too much, but the world is generally scary. I could die in whatever small town US just as easily.
Quote:In a previous thread, somebody mentioned relatives travelling to Europe and being nervous. I'm just curious if others feel the same way.
I am sure my family would but I do not think about it.
Quote:Personally, I do a lot of travel, so I'm not the best to judge. I wouldn't think twice about not going to London for example based on recent events. I don't know if that is because Ive always had a kind of fatalism when travelling (I mean, lets face it, the more often you get on a plane, the more opportunities you'll have to die in a plane crash. thats just logic.)
I see why people would be afraid but the sort of instances we see are rare. They just get overcovered when they do occur. So it seems like a bigger deal than it is. Many people are more likely to die in much more conventional ways that they do not know about.
Quote:And there is something to be said about people changing their lifestyles based upon fear. That is kind of one of the points of the terrorist acts.
Yeah, which is ironic given that it is what politicians try to stoke. Don't let the terrorist win but in some ways they really do when people react in too reactionary a mannor and just respond to the fear.
Quote:A lot of Germans I know go to southern Florida for their winter holidays (Keeping up with the Jones's, or I guess in this case the Schwartz's is very important). Its a running gag in Germany that German tourists get robbed, assulted, etc on their Florida visits. Its so common that it is part of German comedy. But this doesn't seem to make the German's less likely to travel, no matter how much bad press on Florida is out there.
I think, at least from numbers I have heard, international tourists are less likely to visit the US because of Trump and what he is doing as opposed to fear.
Quote:Not sure if that's an apt comparison but I dont see many Europeans not travelling to america for holiday because they are more likely to get shot there.
No, but Trump is often quoted. Rightly or wrongly. At least from the numbers.
Quote:Anyway, I started this post out with something in mind but maybe confused myself. anyway, I leave it out here for any responses.
I think the travel stuff is valid. And there is a cultural component to it. I do think, and I am not basing this on too much other than what I have seen, that proportionally American's tend to be pretty reactionary to fear, in particular terrorism or the threat of it. Particularly from "outsiders".
That may not be totally fair but it seems to be the case to me.
Look Raist bunnies...
