I recall a mess when the Commanding Officer came in drunk and addressed us all. He was smashed and told us all, he wanted us to cheat, to lie, to skive and get away with it. He said this would make us cleverer than most and whilst we would get absolutely whipped if found out, he would never be able to punish us if either a) he didn't know about it or b) could couldn't prove it.

(PS - this wasn't actually true, after being accused of being not a very nice person, he tried all sorts of ways to try and trick me into confessing for something I kind off didn't do, but that's a story for another time, this even included him asking me to admit to something, as it would be bad for morale, if they thought command had been foiled).

However, if you CAN cheat or somehow put yourself above everyone else, should you do it? I always thought no, but having a family, if I can get an advantage, why not do something that will benefit them?

Skiving is something different, but using an army story again; I was ordered to roam the camp between 02:00 to 04:00. I could roam any part I wanted, there was no fixed pattern. I set my mobile alarm to sign in at the guard room, found a hole and slept in it for 90 minutes, signed out and went back to bed. I was working the day before and the day after, putting up medical tents and then putting down medical tents every 30 minutes. This was on exercise on Salisbury Plain, not anything operational and I was told to do it because I was a Southerner.

There are no absolutes. It's okay as long as you don't get caught or it becomes a crutch that weakens you or the group.

But I didn't say this. *winkwink*
