Quote:I am being serious. This is not something that I see people discuss offline.
Quote:It used to mean fighting for equality, rights, and against social inequalities in the world. Ex: Martin Luthor King would be a SJW.
I would say he fought for social justice. The term, as such, did not exist in common usage like it does now.
Quote:It has morphed as all things do (Ex: Swastika used to be a symbol of peace, # used to be number or pound sign not hashtag, etc...)...now it stands for people who jump on the "politically correct" bandwagon with little understanding of why...just because they want to appear like one of the social "good guys", fit in, etc...I could be wrong but I think its a term the Right also uses against liberals....of course liberals call the right Nazis and other things as well.
I thin it is rarely if ever used in a good way. At least as far as I can tell. It is always an insult anymore. I think the thing some forget is that SJ as such is not that gradual. And somebody is going to be offended by it.
I do find it telling that many of those using the label the most are also the ones who defend the free speech of Nazi's more often than they would a feminist. Which is disturbing to me.
Quote:I also think it has gained the reputation as very superficial...as people are ordered according to superficial surface traits. Ex: I watch Bill Maher and they constantly use the term White Men of power doing something bad. When the non-racist way to say it would be a Person in power who happens to be White and Male...would it not? And sure there are more White Males in power...but the real trouble seems to be in this world people in power of any race or sex that misuse it as power corrupts.
I am not sure you can separate the two. Typically the party in power entrenches things in their favor. It is hard to argue that white men have not done that in the US and in many other places. It does not matter how you want to phrase it.
Look Raist bunnies...
