For those who don't know, it's a story about a man who has a deep faith in God. He 3 children, a girl and boy (I think 12 and 14) and a 6 year old girl.

After a canoe accident, he manages to save the 2 older children, but when he comes back his 6 year old girl is missing, with the understanding she was abducted and murdered by a serial killer in a shack.

The dad gets a note telling him to return to the shack, where he meets the holy trinity. They essentially get him to forgive the killer, not forget and attempt to justify this, i.e. you are empowering him, forgiveness doesn't mean you would let him be near your other children nor have a relationship with him, so that God help the killer seek redemption. Later it is revealed, he was hit by a driver and may have imagined the whole thing.

I dislike this. I understand sometimes, you have to try and put things in the back of your mind, but forgiveness? If I ever found out who this was, or if it effected my niece, nephews or god children I think that I (and many people) have it themselves to kill.

When discussing killing with the army padre, he put it to us, clumsily, that it is not immoral to kill, when higher authority from the crown deems it necessary, as the crown and the church are linked. We do not have the wisdom ourselves, but the crown and church do.

When in Iraq, as we got closer to Christmas, my Major informed us that Christmas would be a good day. I disagreed saying that celebrating a holy day, would have us getting mortored, as they would love nothing more than get a casualty on Christmas. The Major disagreed and said 'there is mutual respect', Needless to say, we got mortared 48 times in the day.

I live a damned existence, because I have intensely dark thoughts about the people that killed my father about 50 years ago. They were never identified much less caught. The reason I am so damned is because every fiber of my being also will not accept there is ever a moral reason to kill, not even in self defense. At best, killing just adds more immorality.

But maybe one day I'll be more enlightened.
