Ok that's fair. But is it also fair to point out that I don't think I have once seen any other religion so harped against as Christianity on this board when its coming from Atheists? I personally am Agnostic. But those against religion on this board are always using the word religion or Christianity in their examples...and often Muslims and other religions are given a pass even if its only by omission?

    Quote:
There's a reason we talk about Christianity so much. We live in the Western world, where Christianity is still the overwhelmingly predominant form of religion. Christianity is the faith that impacts our lives on an almost daily basis (And I'm not just talking about negative stuff here, but positive stuff too). I interact on several science websites, and whenever someone of religious belief posts to tell us we're all wrong, that evolution never happened and the Earth isn't four billion years old, 99.9% of the time that someone is a Christian.

I am not defending Christianity at all. But when it comes to true extremism...they are not strapping bombs to children and women and sending them into subway tunnels to kill people. When this is brought up...the response is always something like..."stop labelling them" or "they are not all like this" or something similar. And then the next post is about how terrible Christians are. I am pointing this out because it is biased whether meant or not.

As an Agnostic I am far from happy with the Christians who act morally superior, talk moronic anti-science nonsense etc...It gets a little old when 99.9% of religious bashing on this site though is seemingly focused on one sect. (Not trying to single you out for this...more the overall board...well the posters that are not highly religious \:P )

I'm more than happy to give my views on Islam - and they certainly don't get a pass from me - but the instances of me doing so are less because that religion impacts me less. I'm not picking favourites here.

I think they don't come up (Islam or other religions) is because people fall back into the tried and true and SAFE Christian bashing.

No because they were marginalized as women and as old. Your actually supporting my statement.

    Quote:
But your statement was just plain wrong.

No its a fact. I have interacted directly with 100's of different people that went through this, its in the historical records...religion was stamped down on HARD.

The data is out there...the people who lived through it are still out there...most people dared not go to Church PERIOD.

Just a cursory search turned this up on Wikipedia.

    Quote:
"After Nazi Germany's attack on the Soviet Union in 1941, Joseph Stalin revived the Russian Orthodox Church to intensify patriotic support for the war effort. On September 4, 1943, Metropolitans Sergius (Stragorodsky), Alexius (Simansky) and Nicholas (Yarushevich) had a meeting with Stalin and received a permission to convene a council on September 8, 1943, which elected Sergius Patriarch of Moscow and all the Rus'. This is considered by some as violation of the XXX Apostolic canon, as no church hierarch could be consecrated by secular authorities.[22] A new patriarch was elected, theological schools were opened, and thousands of churches began to function. The Moscow Theological Academy Seminary, which had been closed since 1918, was re-opened".

Note - cannon "as no church hierarch could be consecrated by secular authorities"...it wasn't religious based...it was used by secular

And I can back this up with similar information from many historical sources. Stalin wanted to reach fit, active young men who could go to war.

Quick Wikipedia search and link right here...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USSR_anti-religious_campaign_(1928%E2%80%931941)

Clear persecution of religion.

And the next...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USSR_anti-religious_campaign_(1958%E2%80%931964)

and the next...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USSR_anti-religious_campaign_(1970s%E2%80%931987)

All your link shows is an Atheist state using religion as a weapon against the people...i.e. convince them to go become soldiers and die for the state.

Oh and a anti-religious link about Nazi...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirchenkampf

I am not saying that religion has not committed more than a few atrocities...more like countless. I am showing you 3 atheist states that were just as terrible if not more so. But here again I am not blaming Atheism for this any more than I am blaming Religion because...

Its the misuse of POWER in any form that leads to atrocities imo.
