Quote:Exactly pretty much meaningless...else why were there 3 or 4 more periods of the religious oppression...Stalin included.
Quote:Except that it wasn't. It did precisely the job Stalin wanted it to. Lots of young men attended the churches, and they got all fired up and ready to go to war.
Quote:Stalin would have loved to have completely eradicated religion BUT, his five year plan for doing just that had failed, and after 1941 I think he understood just how useful a tool religion was for controlling people. Having said that, Stalin was a lunatic who'd have you shot if he didn't like the colour of your shoelaces, so yes, the persecutions continued, more severe at some times than others.
Quote:Apart from the period between the revolution and 1941, almost no churches have been officially banned in Russia.
Did you not look at the links I provided? The war on religion was a constant state over there. The persecutions continued.
Quote:So your blaming the victims here? It was the Atheists here using some religious people (as well as non religious) for evil twisted goals. We don't blame victims for other crimes.
Quote:I'm not blaming anyone for anything. That's not the point I'm making here. It's a different topic. I'm just giving a historical summation.
Quote:The point I'm making is that Russia was never truly a secular country in the way that some countries are today: The people never let go of religion.
No you started this by saying religion is basically terrible.
And you are not quite right....Russia was very much a state imposed secular country. Look at the links....there were 4 time periods of serious assault...the link you provided was a grief interlude of far shorter duration.
