I think most people will choose San Junipero, mostly because it was portrayed as a place where two people found their soul mates and lived happily ever after, whereas the USS Callister was a place where innocent people were victimized/subjugated by an all-powerful monster. But neither place was really depicted as heaven on earth, were they?

Take the San Junipero episode. It focused on the two women who fell in love, but there was a third character too. There was a blond guy who fell in love with the black woman. He repeatedly told her he thought they had a real connection. But she kept telling him that she had used him for sex and didn't want to know him. Was that guy enjoying his afterlife?

Just because you are permanently young and on vacation doesn't mean you are going to be happy. Frankly, it looked like an extremely shallow place where people were clubbing (or sex-dungeoning) their way through their afterlife without forming meaningful relationships. Sounds like someplace I'd like to visit for a couple of weeks, but definitely not someplace to spend the infinite hereafter.

As for the USS Callister - no thank you. Being stuck in a virtual world with a bunch of gamers who are at liberty to be the massive trolls they naturally are? Sounds more like hell.

I am actually quite shallow.

I think it's important to note, that in San Junipero, you COULD be single, but I did provide a pass - you can choose one person and there will be a few acquaintances guaranteed.

Yes, eventually shallowness may overcome you, which is why it is important that your social group is well adjusted. Otherwise, it would be a real life version of Angel from Buffy.

The gamer's would do my head in and I'd always be stressed out if the the web won't down (the controlled San J universe seems more secure to me).

Would you do one, or would you take the risk? (I know it's not strictly true, but assume that USS Callister is a choice like San J, not just a duplicate).
