Quote:I think this last paragraph really hits at the mentality behind the gun culture in America. To a lot of gun proponents, self-defense is an all-or-nothing game ... you either leave a person completely hassle-free, or any encroachment on their person can be met with deadly force. Letting the robber have your wallet to avoid any an all bloodshed probably won't be the first, second or even third thing to enter a conceal-and-carry person's mind. Compounding it all is the fact that professionals receive their training partly so they know how to handle the stress in situations like this; I imagine it's a skill your average, Second Amendment Joe wouldn't necessarily have.
Quote:For my part, I honestly can't say how I position myself here. I value the sanctity of life, but I also value working hard to obtain the things you possess, and the right to defend those possessions. There's also a point where it becomes less about personal defense, and more about generally trying to deter crime, which is a physical, psychological and monetary detriment to individual victims and society as a whole.
To be perfectly clear, I too highly value what I worked hard to get. It's just that my life is worth a lot more than any possession I could ever get. Dead, or badly crippled, what do I care about money?
If you want to deter crime, sporting a gun will likely only force the criminal and the desperate to go for bigger guns and so on and so forth. You won't ever stop criminality with guns. You will put an end to it the day people have no more reasons to resort to it (being able to maintain self-sufficiency of all their needs). In short, you need to work on the economy, not guns.
