Quote:It kind of riles me up when feminists and the like parade this around that it's due to sexism. I think that feminism is okay, but is this what it's come to? Weren't feminists back in the day more honest?
Yeah, of course a very conservative think tank is going to propagate this spiel. Yes, the gender wage gape can be misleading and there is a gender earnings gap, but there remains a gender wage gap as well. It's complicated and people can misuse the statistics easily, but this encapsulates the situation pretty well:
Basically studies show when factors are the same for both genders, women tend to still lag behind and on average get paid about 93%-95% of what men do. Women have done a lot of catching up with men, but there are a lot of industries in which women are paid less than men for doing the same work or just aren't hired. Take the film industry, which is largely run by men. Only about 10% of feature film directors are women. Or you get Mark Wahlberg getting paid $1.5 million for reshoots and Michelle Williams getting paid $1,000 for the same thing. Women are catching up, but they aren't quite there yet.
It makes it illegal to pay either sex less for working the same hours in the same position. Did you read some of the reasons listed in the article? Among the reasons are Men being more likely to ask for a raise, men being able to relocate, men willing to work longer hours, take less vacation time, and a few other reasons. There's not proof that this exists due to sexism, although in some cases it is doubtlessly there. Oh yeah, also- Motherhood!
As to Hollywood, do you know who pretty much runs and controls the adult film and porn industry? And did you know that the large majority of custody cases end in sole custody for the women? Sounds like they might not be lagging behind in everything.
