Wasn't it also that they had asked them multiple times if they were going to get something. Most of those loitering students studying have bought at least a cup of coffe when they got there.

A $3 cup of coffee entitles you to a table for hours, where as "We're waiting on a friend" is grounds to be asked to leave? I know it's anecdotal, but I've never been in a restaurant (specifically Starbucks) where the former was allowed while the latter wasn't.
