A $3 cup of coffee entitles you to a table for hours, where as "We're waiting on a friend" is grounds to be asked to leave? I know it's anecdotal, but I've never been in a restaurant (specifically Starbucks) where the former was allowed while the latter wasn't.

Yeah, I do not know the full on details of this. While it is within their right to ask somebody to leave if they are doing something wrong, heck I even see it if the place is busy and you are just chatting after eating or drinking or whatever.

I have seen folks be at places like this for quite a while and nothing is done one way or another to them. Most people, as far as I know, seem to get something at some point, but I doubt getting a drink and hanging out for a few hrs is much different than waiting.

That said, if it were me, I think I either would have left or ordered a drink or something while I waited. If it was that long at any rate.
