There were 2 men who refused to order anything to drink or eat. They refused to leave, they used the facilities.

The police were called and asked them 3 times to leave. They refused and were arrested for trespassing.

The police have stood by their guys, rightly so.

This isn't a colour problem. If I was taking up space and not paying for a service, I would expect to get arrested.

I'm sorry guys, but as usual I don't understand how things work in your country.
If you are a restaurant owner, don't you have the right to ask people to leave if they are using your facilities if they aren't patronising your business? I mean what is to stop vagrants from coming in and using your seats as beds then?

I understand that it seems to be common practice, but if I'm a customer in a restaurant, I know that isn't public property and I have to abide by the owner/manager's rules. And if I refuse to leave, I understand that their only legal recourse is to call the authorities.

If you are asked to leave, whether it is because you aren't buying anything, are just using their facilities as a meeting place, aren't meeting their dress code, are doing something against their rules, etc, then you leave. You can always meet your friend outside if that is your real purpose for being there. This has happened to me when I was a teenager and had no money to buy things.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding as I dont have any info, I'm guessing there's more to it, but on a basic level, I don't get it. But things really always seem to work differently in the US.
