I guess the question is, why were they asked in the first place? I've honestly never even been in a Starbucks were employees approached patrons, or even really came from behind the counter. According to the link I posted above, the two were there less than 10 minutes before cops arrived. They really weren't even given enough time TO loiter.

I'm proud to say, I've only been in a Starbucks once as they seem to be a horrible sterilized homogonised copy of Italian coffee shops, so I'm unfamilar with the policy. If they say you can sit and not buy, well that seems a poor business model to me. But again, I'm not familiar with how service works in these places.

But I've lived in Rome where the original coffee shops are, and they aren't gonna let you sit any occupy a table. In fact, you pay extra to have your coffee sitting down.:-)
