I'm proud to say, I've only been in a Starbucks once as they seem to be a horrible sterilized homogonised copy of Italian coffee shops, so I'm unfamilar with the policy. If they say you can sit and not buy, well that seems a poor business model to me. But again, I'm not familiar with how service works in these places.

According to the two, the details seem to suggest they weren't given much of a chance to do anything before the cops were called. Most people use the restroom before placing an order, yet they were denied even this service upon entering.

But I've lived in Rome where the original coffee shops are, and they aren't gonna let you sit any occupy a table. In fact, you pay extra to have your coffee sitting down.:-)

Far be it from me to judge anyone's culture, but that doesn't sound very hospitable ;\-\)

Have you been to Rome? There's not much space in old cities. Most coffee shops have 2, 3 or 4 tables. What would you do if you had people taking up your expensive real estate and not paying anything for the usage? I mean, it just feels like basic manners to me.

Funnily enough, you can occupy that table for hours as long as you buy something once. Eating in restaurants in America, I always felt like I was being rushed out the door. They put the fricken bill on the table without you even asking for it:-)
