Have you been to Rome? There's not much space in old cities. Most coffee shops have 2, 3 or 4 tables. What would you do if you had people taking up your expensive real estate and not paying anything for the usage? I mean, it just feels like basic manners to me.

Apologies. I meant my comment as a light quip, but I can't shake that it came off as judgmental. I've never been to Rome, and am in no place to say how or why things should go the way they do in its establishments.

Funnily enough, you can occupy that table for hours as long as you buy something once. Eating in restaurants in America, I always felt like I was being rushed out the door. They put the fricken bill on the table without you even asking for it:-)

From my experience this is more likely to happen at a casual dining, but never a fast-food chain, and never ever a Starbucks. The Starbucks I've been to don't even serve you, so much as take your order at the counter, fulfill it, then give it to you so you can find your own seat. Most workers at Starbucks don't even pay any outward attention to who's occupying a table.

But as more information has come to light, it doesn't sound like any of this applies to this particular case. Like I said, the two were on the premises less than 10 minutes before the cops arrived. Short of being outwardly belligerent or violent (customers said they were neither), 10 minutes isn't enough time to commit any grievance worth calling the cops over.

Beyond this, we'll just have to agree to disagree.
