It seems that Trump plans to announce the US's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal later today.

I haven't read the full details of the deal myself, but it's hard not to view it as a questionable decision based solely on the fact that it places us at stark odds with pretty much all of our major allies.

This has the potential to be the most idiotic move of Trump's presidency.

First, if Iran chooses to pursue nuclear weapons again, they could potentially have them in a year. Under the deal, they wouldn't have nuclear weapons for at least ten.

Second, Trump gave Iranian hardliners, who want nuclear weapons, a win, and Iranian moderates a loss. Trump proved hardliners right when they said the U.S. could not be trusted. Why would Iran renegotiate?

Third, Trump is making clear that U.S. agreements are worthless. If a new administration is just going to override a previous administration, then how can anyone trust the U.S.? Why should North Korea negotiate with the U.S. if the U.S. won't honor our previous agreements?

Fourth, Europe has no incentive to reimpose sanctions because Iran didn't break the deal. The U.S. did. U.S. sanctions are much less meaningful without European sanctions and without those sanctions, Iran further has no reason to renegotiate.

So Trump doesn't get anything out of this except tarnishing U.S. reputation, and in a worst case scenario, Iran having nuclear weapons in a year.
