I have a friend R who is cheap, there's been a few things.

We arranged to go out for a few beers. K and I got a call from R asking us to meet him at the door of the bar. They were charging 50p to get in the door (about 35 to 40 cents). R didn't have any money on him.

I gave him the 50p and asked him why he was going on a night out without any money. K had just brought a round and as I turned around R had lit up a cigarette in a no smoking pub. R got kicked out the pub and was telling us that he we needed to leave. I told him to wait and that we were drinking the pints first.

Whenever we go out, he always hides or goes home when it is his round.

When friends and I used to go out, we'd handle our own drinks. None of that "buying a round" stuff. See, when we'd go out, I'd typically have 2 maybe 3 drinks the entire night. They might not have a problem downing 2 maybe 3 pitchers of beer each. No way was I going to pay for what they were drinking.

My wife and I went around for a chinese takeaway. I ordered a curry, rice, the wife sweet and sour chicken, rice etc. R and his wife then ordered their stuff. After paying our bills, then said it would be a good idea if we mixed it all up for a buffet. Rather naively, I agreed (this was the first time, they had met my wife, she was my GF at this point), so I didn't push the issue.

It came in and there were the meals my wife and I had ordered. The rest of it was stuff we didn't like, vegetable rolls, cheap stuff of the menu and wasn't appetising.

When everyone had eaten, our food had been eaten and the leftovers were what they had ordered (so they didn't even like the food they had ordered). Afterwards, we went and got something to eat afterwards.

Yeah, I don't ever play that game when eating out (and it tends to be Asian food where this is done). There's a reason I'm probably not ordering the same dish as someone else-- I don't want it. I don't want to taste it, and I might not be too thrilled to smell it. Shared appetizers are fine, but only appetizers.

Doesn't even matter to me who pays. I don't understand the buffet thing, even if I'm on the winning end. Long ago, the parents of a girl I dated did this when we'd go out (only for Asian food, never the French, Mexican, Italian, etc. restaurants). It was the 4 of us, so there would be 4 different entrees, 3 of which I did not want. So, I was stuck eating a quarter of what I wanted and often nothing else. And on the way home, I'd stop by Taco Bell or something.

Next time they asked again and I repeatedly said we would order our food and eat our food, as I didn't like their food. I repeated this 3 times, with R saying 'we get it' and the wife telling me to stop going on. We ordered similarly to what we had done before.

The food came and everyone stared at me, whilst I took my curry out. I literally put half the rice on my plate, followed by about 3 quarters of the curry on my plate. R screamed 'you selfish bas!!d' at me. I said to him, 'did I need to say it 4 times, you eat what you order'. The wife offered her food to them and I said no, whilst R ate his vegetables.

Am I being unfair? Why order food you don't like?

Yeah, you did the right thing.
