In my little suburban loop, there's a stray grey cat that I think we've seen off and on for the last year or two. I only see it every couple months. I don't really even know if it's a stray, it could be like our family cat that wanders the neighborhood but always comes back to our house.

So I just found out a few days ago that recently my kids started feeding this cat and petting it and getting friendly, "because he looks hungry and sad" so now every time I come home or go out on our porch, there it is waiting.

I don't really want another cat but my kids paying attention to it has obviously drawn it to us. He's getting bolder and will probably try sneaking in our house whenever the door's ajar. I told my kids to leave it alone but no success.

So now I guess my options are, get mean with my kids, get mean with the cat, or I have a new cat. Any other strategies?

I'm late responding to this, but everyone missed the obvious answers.

Call a local shelter and see if they can take it in. Depending on where you live, there could be a Humane Society or local pet rescue shelters that take in strays, make sure they are healthy and then adopt them out. If your city has a no kill policy, then calling the police to get it would also work, as if no one claims it then it would go to one of the shelters.

Take it to a vet and see if it is microchipped, if so, it can be taken back to them and you might learn whose cat it is.

Leaving it on the street is the wrong answer, in my opinion.
