But politics isn't about waiting around and hoping that the opposing side will literally see the light and become better people. I would say foremost if your left of center you should be trying to form as large a democratic coalition as you can so unpopular measures like overturning Roe--or not enshrining it into law in the first place will people far more difficult. I generally approve of the Dems vague position on abortion rights. I do find that more appropriate morally. I'm unequivocally pro choice. I concede btw its a difficult more issue, and I wouldn't be glib about it. My point is that liberals should move away from this technocratic, meritocratic acceptance of a party by a for elites, and move towards a populists politics that's respond to most people's economic and political needs. That way our values can't be so easily undone by these sort of byzantine procedural coups. If you cultivate a party that's primarily a working class party that will definitionally be a majority party, and it'll be able to push and pressure to legislate these kinds of social issues. Rather than hoping the the House of Cards lobbyists and Sorkin esc too-clever-by-half, 3 dimensional chess players triangulate in just such a way that we get what we want. As I've said, the Republicans are just way better at this kind of politics, so I don't understand why would be "pragmatic" libs insist on playing politics in a way that Republicans are more likely to win. cheers, ---the late great Donald Blake | |||||||
