Right.  Right.  I'm aware.  Putin bad.  I don't disagree.  I just think it's a bit naive to think that what's motivating this kind of decision on our part-- the sanctions and our stated intention of extending the war--is attributable to a belief in democracy or such unyielding moral scruples.  As I've said, if that were the set of motivating principles then how would you explain our relationship with Saudi Arabia?  With our AT BEST passive acceptance of their humanitarian abuses against the people of Yemen?  Or for the Israeli occupation of Palestine.  It's all principles and pearl clutching with Russia but all cynical realpolitik with out monstrous "allies."

I mean I guess, but the general intention seems to be in support of a sovereign country fighting an invasion. One can give reasons why that is the right thing to do even if you are not making a moral judgement or some grander claim. Although those are going to be made to try and win public support.

An extended war is in nobodies best interest for the world economy. However, the country that decides how long the conflict will be is Russia at this point. We could say that it is everyone elses fault too for joining in, but them stepping back and letting Russia have there was does not seem to be good for avoiding similar conflicts in the future either.

Who says what SA does or Israel does should not warrant a response? It should, but the strength of a response in international politics often is a function of what that country gives to the world. You know that.

It does make US actions inconsistent at best but such is the way of international politics. Practically, it is probably not possible for the US and western allies to take on every bad actor at once with sanctions. Just because there are a number of them.
