In strictest terms it's irrational, but they think he's doing this on behalf of them. If not in some direct sense, in kind of a spiritual avatar kind of sense. And not even most Trump voters, but for his core supporters, they really identify with him. I think for a lot of them, especially those with the narcissistic persecution complex that's at the heart of their politics, the thought that he might be guilty of something is sort of unthinkable... because they don't feel they could be guilty of anything. And if they thought he DID do something illegal, they would probably think that he should be made a legal exception because of how important he is. I always think it's worth wondering how they got so attached. Or what the political and material conditions were such that that many people were susceptible to being taken up by it.

I think it was specific political environment but it seems to be a build up of various thoughts to give rise to the ideology that came to Trump. I mean in most respects Trump is the Rush Limbaugh of political candidates. In the past they were ignored but now they have the party as a whole which is fairly scary to consider.

Moreso because they are quite good at gaining and consolidating power when they do have it.

It is an odd situation though, as the current conservative movement, or at least the CPAC crowd, has very positive views of authoritarian strong men that weaken democracy.

Look Raist bunnies...
