True it is not cut and dry, but SCOTUS would have to seriously reinterpret the laws to say that the President is exempt from penalty for destroying/mishandling classified material.

There is no mention in those laws that POTUS is exempt and I can easily see a lot of federal employees saying that if it impacts us then it impacts POTUS as well.

However if DOJ states he is ineligible and then it goes to SCOTUS that will take some time, and in that time, someone else will likely get the GOP nomination and whether it is the Dems or GOP that wins, it won't be him.

This presumes of course that he isn't indicted/convicted about Jan 6th.

Not meaning to be negative but I doubt he will be for anything. He should be but when you are rich, powerful and leader of one of the political parties it is clear that the law does not apply to you.

As the checks and balances will fall apart.

He is totally responsible for Jan 6th but he has a reasonable chance of being president again. Either through a fair election or because the GOP has control of enough states or the House to give him control in a corrupt election.

Or SCOTUS if they just give absolute authority to state legislatures as is feared.

In many respects Trump could be the culmination of alot of bad things that end many aspects of the US and welcome in true authoritarian single party rule.

Yes he could usher in an era of single party rule.

As to being the most powerful person around, well he is no longer the sitting President and all the authority and protection that comes from that is now in Biden's possession.

As an ex-President he has some clout yes, and yes he has the mindless loyalty of many in the GOP that want to be re-elected, however after this raid and how the AG made that brief speech about what was done and how the DoJ does not show exception to anyone, there are some in the GOP with some egg on their face and Trump himself is now backed into a legal corner and it doesn't look like he can get out of it.

The Warrant has been unsealed and we are learning what items they were looking for, including nuclear documents.

If he is not supposed to have any of these such things then he has misappropriated them and they could proceed to enact the laws I previously posted and disqualify him.

If they do not then the laws mean nothing.

I am also quite confident that there is at least one mole in his organization. He demands loyalty but doesn't return it so I am sure at least one person has flipped.  They are likely doing so out of their own self preservation but that is fine with me at this point.

As to who it could be, who knows?
